The Transformation of Vietnamese Immigration to the United States – On this past July 4, 2016 holiday, I had an opportunity of a lifetime to return to where my father and I began our journey from Vietnam to the United States. On June 6, 1979, after a week of crossing the South China Sea by boat, my father and I along with 450 other souls were taken to a refugee island-camp at an island known as Pulau Babi Tengah.  We stepped ashore with nothing but the shirt and pants that we wore, and on the first night, we slept on the beach.  Pulau Babi Tengah is 9 nautical miles off the east coast of Malaysia.
